Psychological First Aid (PFA)

Psychological First Aid (PFA) is an evidence-informed modular approach to help first responders in the immediate aftermath of disasters and other critical events. First responders to such events, may struggle with or face new challenges following the event.

PFA is designed to reduce the initial distress caused by traumatic events and to
foster short- and long-term coping skills and adaptive functioning. PFA is based on the understanding that first responders and others affected by such events will experience a broad range of early reactions (e.g., physical, cognitive, psychological, behavioral, spiritual). Some of these reactions will cause enough distress to interfere with adaptive coping, and recovery may be helped by support from compassionate and caring persons. PFA does not assume that all first responders and impacted persons will develop severe mental health problems or long-term difficulties in recovery.

This course shares many similar principles as any one-on-one course in
psychological first aid. The primary difference is that this course is specifically
designed for first responders and those who do peer to peer interventions.
